February 11, 2025: Billionaire Gautam Adani’s family plans to invest 60 billion rupees ($686.18 million) to set up two health campuses in the Indian cities of Mumbai and Ahmedabad in association with Mayo Clinic Global Consulting, according to a statement.
The Adani Health City plan will be implemented through the Adani Group’s not-for-profit healthcare arm, according to the statement from the group.
“The Adani family will fully meet the cost of bringing affordable, world-class medical care and medical education to people from all strata of society pan India.”
The family’s donation funds will build the “first two of these integrated health campuses in Ahmedabad and Mumbai. Gautam Adani has plans for more such integrated Adani Health Cities in cities and towns across India.”
1,000-bed hospitals
The integrated health city campuses will comprise 1,000-bed multi-super-specialty hospitals, medical colleges with an annual intake of 150 undergraduates, 80-plus residents and 40-plus fellows, step-down and transitional care facilities, and research facilities.
The medical ecosystem “aims to serve people from all socio-economic backgrounds, train the next generation of doctors and focus on clinical research, artificial intelligence and biomedical informatics.”
The US-based Mayo Clinic will provide strategic advice on organisational objectives and clinical practices at these establishments.
Mayo Clinic will also offer expert guidance on the integration of technology, with a focus on digital and information technology and healthcare quality enhancement.
‘Affordable healthcare’
“The development of Adani Health City is the first of many major projects… which will go a long way towards providing affordable, world-class healthcare to people from every section of Indian society,” said Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, headquartered in the western city of Ahmedabad.
Gautam Adani’s group has interests in ports, airports, power generation and transmission, green energy, edible oils, cement and real estate, among others.
Adani grew his company, which began in 1988 as a commodities trading firm, into new sectors through debt-financing acquisitions.
Adani is India’s biggest airport operator with eight airports and also controls Mundra Port, India’s largest by cargo capacity, in his home state of Gujarat. Adani became India’s second-largest cement producer by capacity in 2022 after acquiring Swiss firm Holcim’s Indian assets for $6.4 billion.
