Pandemic-born four-year-olds read well but struggle to focus: Study

July18,2026: One in three four-year-olds born during England’s first COVID-19 lockdown is struggling to focus, follow instructions, or manage frustration in the classroom even as many of the same children show stronger-than-expected vocabularies, according to a new study of 205 children published in Archives of Disease in Childhood.

The children were tracked as part of the BICYCLE study (Born In COVID Year – Core Lockdown Effects), led by Professor Nicola Botting and Professor Lucy Henry at City St George’s, University of London, working with colleagues at six other English universities. All 205 were born between March 23 and June 23, 2020, the peak of England’s strictest lockdown, when baby groups were shut, social distancing was mandatory, and contact with anyone outside the household was severely limited.

The headline isn’t all cause for concern, the researchers are careful to note. “Most children in the sample we assessed are doing really well and scoring as expected for age or even better overall,” Botting and Henry told Earth.com.

The split: strong words, weak brakes

The researchers tested the children directly on language and reasoning, and asked parents to fill out questionnaires on executive function — the set of mental skills that let a child plan ahead, hold instructions in mind, resist distraction, and adjust behaviour when a plan isn’t working. Think of it as the brain’s project manager, not its vocabulary bank.

On language, the lockdown cohort did well. Sentence structure, vocabulary, and receptive language scores were all at or above pre-pandemic norms. But executive function told a different story: caregiver-reported scores came in notably below expected levels, and a third of the children — roughly double the rate researchers expected — were flagged as having real difficulty in this area.

“A significant minority of children may need support with their ‘executive functioning’ — for example following instructions, staying on task, paying attention and not getting distracted, switching between tasks, and regulating their emotions and behaviour,” Botting said.

Why words held up but self-control didn’t

The researchers’ working theory is about who these children were talking to, not how much. Locked down with parents and caregivers, infants likely got more one-on-one language input than usual, which may have protected receptive language (how well a child understands what’s said to them). But the pandemic stripped away the wider, messier social world: strangers, other children, unfamiliar adults; the interactions that typically stretch a toddler’s ability to self-regulate in unpredictable situations.

The researchers noted expressive language — how a child puts thoughts into words — measured somewhat lower than the children’s own reasoning ability would predict, a signal that the loss of varied social contact left its mark even where vocabulary looks strong on paper.

A global disruption, not just a British one

England’s cohort isn’t an isolated case study. At the height of pandemic lockdowns, UNICEF estimated more than 150 million children under five in East Asia and the Pacific alone had their early development disrupted, at a stage when roughly 90 percent of brain development happens in a child’s first 1,000 days. The BICYCLE findings give one of the first hard, standardised data sets showing what that disruption may look like several years later, in an actual classroom.

What the researchers are recommending

The study’s authors are cautious about overreach. They say this is observational data without a matched comparison group, and participating families had notably higher education levels than the general population, which may have inflated some scores. But their guidance for schools is direct: prioritise behavioural regulation and executive-function support in the classroom, rather than routing every struggling child straight to individual screening or specialist referral.

“This study highlights the need for continued tracking of the cohort of children born during the COVID-19 lockdowns,” the researchers wrote in the published paper. “Additional resources may be needed for school and family interventions to support the executive function needs of these children.”

Asked what change they most want to see, Botting and Henry pointed to practical classroom fixes over individual diagnosis: more classroom assistants, room for small-group work, and structured support for children who need it, built into everyday teaching rather than bolted on after a referral.

The BICYCLE team’s next phase will test executive function directly rather than relying on parent reports, and compare this cohort against children born after restrictions lifted — with full results expected in 2027.
