2026 Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak roadmap

21 May, 2026: A presentation of the Ebola outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus (BDBV). First identified in the Bundibugyo district of Uganda in 2007, this strain re-emerged as a major international public health emergency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda. The World Health Organisation (WHO), which declared the outbreak a public health emergency, stated that as of 19 May, more than 500 suspected cases, including 130 suspected deaths, have been reported by the DRC’s Ministry of Health. So far, 30 cases have been confirmed in the DRC.
