July 23, 2026: Peptides, the short chains of amino acids that serve as the building blocks of proteins, are generating significant buzz as regulatory bodies begin scrutinizing their efficacy in delivering glowing health benefits.

On July 23–24, U.S. FDA advisers are meeting to evaluate the efficacy of seven popular peptides and determine whether they can be legally compounded by licensed pharmacies. This review was driven by the skyrocketing, unregulated use of these compounds among the general public.

What are peptides?

Peptides are chains of 2 to 50 amino acids  that naturally regulate a wide array of bodily functions, including hormone activity, immune defense, tissue repair and growth, inflammation control, and digestion. The body can create countless types of peptides by stringing together different amino acids, with each unique combination producing highly specific effects.

Familiar and medically proven examples include insulin (which regulates blood sugar), endorphins (which block pain), and the active ingredients in popular GLP-1 weight-loss drugs like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy).

The celebrity-fueled hype

The current craze is driven by a potent mix of social media hype and high-profile endorsements, making peptides one of the fastest-growing wellness trends. Figures such as Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—a self-reported user of these peptides—and podcaster Joe Rogan have publicly discussed their usage, further fueling public interest. Kennedy has also argued that current restrictions on the compounds have pushed consumers toward an unregulated gray market.

Proponents claim that peptides support muscle growth, skin health, improved energy levels, cognitive function, and enhanced sleep quality. This enthusiasm is reflected in search data: global Google searches for “peptides” have surged from roughly 1.3 million per month in 2024 to approximately 8 million per month in 2026. Meanwhile, the global peptide market is projected to nearly triple, reaching $11.2 billion by 2035.

The risks of unregulated use

Despite the hype, medical experts strongly caution against unsupervised use, citing a lack of evidence for many touted benefits and significant safety risks.

Most of the trendy peptides being discussed—such as BPC-157, TB-500, and MOTS-c— arnot approved by the FDA for human use. They are often sold as “research chemicals” not intended for human consumption, frequently purchased online through a “gray market” with minimal oversight. This means their purity, dosage, and safety are largely unknown, and products may be contaminated or mislabeled.

The risks are not trivial. Most injectable peptides promoted via social media can trigger allergic reactions and autoimmune issues, according to some studies. “You’re really just experimenting with injecting amino acids into your body,” warns Dr. Pieter Cohen, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School who studies dietary supplements. Injecting these substances can lead to infections, abscesses, and other complications. Reported side effects include joint pain, headaches, mood changes, and hormonal imbalances, with some cases even resulting in hospitalizations.

Because these compounds are new and largely unstudied in humans, their long-term effects remain completely unknown.

Where Is the Evidence?

While there are proven peptides with real therapeutic benefits—such as insulin, endorphins, and GLP-1 agonists—the majority of peptides popularized for their supposed wellness benefits lack significant human trials to support such claims. A handful of test-tube and animal studies suggest that peptides like BPC-157, CJC-1295, and GHK-Cu might support injury recovery and wound healing, but large-scale human trials are urgently needed to evaluate both efficacy and safety before any definitive claims can be made.

Before considering any peptide therapy, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider who can offer evidence-based advice and help you understand the real risks involved. While the promise of optimal health is alluring, the science behind these trendy compounds has yet to catch up to the buzz.
